Gulabo Sitabo film is based in the backdrop of an ancient villa called Fatima manzil in the rustic city of Lucknow. Mirza is the landlord of the villa and wants to kick out all the old tenants who have been staying there for ages so that he can enjoy the sole ownership of the villa. But one of the tenants Bankey does not want to leave and creates problem all the time. Left with no choice, Mirza uses the law to kick out his tenants. How much does he be in doing this forms the rest of the story.
Director Soojit Sircar gets it right once again with his narration. The backdrop he chooses and the way he sets his key characters of Amitabh and Ayushman in the old city of Lucknow is superb.
Overall Gulabo Sitabo is a well made film with a unique premise and interesting narration. Go for it.

Powerful performances and intense battling sequences make this movie a more mature adaptation stressing the story's theme of female empowerment and family devotion. My wife and I loved the Disney animated version. As do our girls we wanted to see if it was appropriate for them and it really depends on there maturity level. Really enjoyed watching it !

Good Comedy film and excellent acting by Amit ji and Ayushman.Definitely a must watch, but don't expect much as hype was created before release.Story is very simple and can be understood in one view. stoy is short and it doesn't feel like a full movie.Rather it seems a short-film type.

The story is quite a simple one of a landlord and it's multi generation of tenants who are adamant to not increase the rent and neither vacate the Haveli called Fatima Mahal. The landlord Mirza is one of the best things of this movie, the acting, makeup makes Amitabh disappear in him where he becomes Mirza. He is quite a greedy and frustrated all because his tenants refuse to pay more, he doesn't have any other means but to steal petty stuff like lightbulbs and cycle horn for few bucks. Most of his anger is vented upon Bankey Rastogi played by Aayushman who gives a slight lisp to add to his character. Everyone is trying to be smart than other in the end only one wins creating a mused ending which gives a quite chuckle. All in all good movie to watch during this stay at home

Gulabo Sitabo : I know a lot of people will raise their eyebrows if I say it reminds me of the iconic Jalsaghar by late Satyajit Ray, but it did. Can't remember when was the last time, a mansion became so alive, that it deserves a seperate mention despite of the presence of two acting powerhouses of our present and past generation. Amitabh and Ayushman along with bunch of charector artists creates such a magic on screen that you wonder, whether you are watching a movie, or is it the reality wrapped in satire. On a flip side, by todays standrad the movie is not fast enough, but at the same time it is engaging enough to make you seat through. The climax is something which we can give an example of out of the box thinking and real, not about making anyone happy. Like the haveli, this movie has lots of lair to explore, which someone may love, may hate, but can't pinpoint and mark with a particular shade. Definately worth a watch, but be patient, like the age of the mansion, this movie also will take its own sweet time to unfold and wrap you.

Gulabo Sitabo is a well - crafted satirical film with a picturesquely crumbling mansion at its center. It's a film rich in details, be it the characters, relationships, desires, lust, insecurities or the ploy. Amitabh Bachchan plays the grouchy 'Mirza' with a character actor's delicacy and attention to detail. Ayushmann Khurrana once again brings something new to the table with his body language, which portrays sadness and bitterness borne out of poverty. Vijay Raaz is effortless as ever, and Brijendra Kala is also terrific. Shrishti Shrivastava deserves a special mention. Last but not the least, Farrukh Jafar is an absolute delight to watch. Despite few dull moments and a bit slow, the film manager to string all the loose ends well together in the end. The thoughtfully well-written songs in the backdrop add texture to the film. In short, the film explores different traits of the mortals with an underlying message through a simple, quirky and enchanting story in a subtly humorous way. In case you miss it, the director's nonchalant reference of the chair depicts it all in the end.

The movie uses trope for a transparent depiction of the class distinction between haves and have-nots in our society, among other subtexts. who seem to be constantly at loggerheads. When Baankey’s former girlfriend Fauzia pays a visit to his shop to buy ‘organic wheat’ and that he must have never even heard the term organic ‘kyunki dekh ke nahin lagta’. Or that one time when Baankey’s sisters Guddo Shristi, Neetu and Payal – take a jibe at him for being uneducated and playfully demand he appear again for 10th and 12th board exams. comedy of quotidian manners: the first gave Bollywood a new kind of hero in Khurrana; the second gave the Bengali alimentary canal the importance it through Bachchan’s elderly gent and his penchant for gelusil. you can still see Mirza’s scheming brain working; his eyes sparkle when he thinks of a particularly devious way to trouble his tenant. A word that many people use for Mirza – ‘tuccha’ – is hard to translate in English, but perfectly sums up the character. but Mirza doesn’t get a happy ending, and that is just as well.

This movie shows the authenticity of Lucknow and their people in the most believable, amazing and funny way possible. Sometimes, the love for some material things are more than the love for someone. Amitabh sir and Ayushman gave an outstandingly amazing performance with quirks and uniqueness of the characters they played. They nailed the tenant-landlord's squabbles with kicks of unexpected laughter. Movies like Gulabo Sitabo, which has every element of surprise and laughter with really good content and amazing cast with amusing characters is worth watching and praising. Shoojit Sarkar has again proved his vision to be unique and thoughtful.

A perfect illustration of when "Love people and use things" is reversed. Lovely to see how the movie started with 'katputilis' and certainly ends with a message of how humans are basically puppets of their thoughts. How Patriarchy without the papers/legally is yet prominently inherit- just like Mirza thought of the haveli, simply bypassing begum's will. Amazing powerplay of gender roles, and how society is just non-existent and falls on its knees when these roles backfire. It was also intriguing to observe Begum living life at her own terms despite the age, and Mirza, fall back both- on love and himself.

Absolutely amazing movie! I keep going back to watching it again and again each time I feel lost amongst the millions of dizzying choices offered on the Internet. Amitabh Bachchan, Ayushmann Khurana and each of the other actors ace in their performances and Begum takes the cake! Outstanding. The attention to details is just mind blowing. Truly spectacular. I can feel Amitabh Bachchan pain from his slouch walk after hours of shooting in that posture. What a absolute delight this movie is. And the timing could not be have been more immaculate when audience was starved for good quality entertainment from Bollywood.

This movie is emotional and must watch. The script is good enough and contains the real picture of ‘reforming buildings’ which eventually is destroying the heritage sites and provenances of India, which is, of course, not expected. In the direction, Shoojit Sircar is always a step ahead than the others and this time too, he is at his best.In acting, Mr. Amitabh Bachchan is awesome portraying the character of the ‘owner’, Mirza Sheikh. Even if the character has a negative impact, you will love his performance. On the other hand, Ayushmann really deserves an award for his character of Baankey Rastogi, the tenant. Their screen presence brings another layer to the film and it will engage you in a manner that you will keep waiting when they both will be together again.

This movie is so tasteful and every character and situations is dwelt upon. While Bachan and Khurana are as usual awesome, the minor characters have been portrayed not only well but the actors left me speechless namely the character Pandey ji, begum and khurana's girlfriend. This movie is so beautiful and witty that I can say it deserve s endless praise. The Lucknow depicted is so authentic that as a Lucknowite I was enchanted and once again fell in love with with my own city. Much appreciation for the director, the script writer and the whole cast and crew. All those who love witty intelligent stories, will love this flim.

The film portrays human inclining towards extreme greed and losing out on everything, the climax stands out and the humour infused in the film is dark and wacky , the film could have been a bit shorter as the current runtime is a bit over stretched and feels boring and off track at points , performances are top notch by both our talented actors BACCHAN SAAB & AYUSHMAN KHURANA their jodi is truely priceless . The character make over for Amitabh Bacchan is overdone , usage of prostehtics is clearly visible but good news is Bacchab sab overshadows it with his super amazing performance throughout the film . The movie has a great message put up by its end . All together the film is slow paced and dosent live up to its expectation , You can watch it for its amazing climax and performances by the lead pairs.

Director Sircar brings the best out of Amitabh Bachhan and Ayushman Khurana. These real world celebrities look so down to earth and very honest representations of the Lucknow masses. Brijendra Kala and Vijay Raaz are as always real and their best. This is a story of very very common people who think in very common ways and in trying to get the better out of life end up losing the bet to it. Acting wise nothing to say it is so stupendous by everyone. Amitabh's low gruff voice, was a struggle to hear and understand clearly, not sure if that was because of watching on laptop. I think most people gave up on the movie, is because the trailer promises comedy and comedy it is but not the normal slapstick or cocky humour kind of.

Gulabo sitabo sets itself immensely to be in drama side, tries at times to become satire and succeeds only to an extent. Script writer Juhi chaturvedi picks an interesting plot and develop meaty characters. The pick of the lot will be Stubborn and Greedy Mirza and Begum, who stood bold in her decisions. What she did best is placing engaging incidents (brick problem, introduction of archeology officer introducing lawyer to enhance Mirza's efforts to get hold of the mansion) developing the problem between Mirza and tenants. But the problem is that script gets a clumsy nature after a point. Shoojit sircar's slow narration adds clumsiness and Climax twist brings back the movie on track. Climax brings empathy for Mirza's character as well as justifies the actions of Begum. Frames beautifully captured the Lucknow city and the mansion. Background score provides a satirical element though not evident throughout. Amitabh bachchan puts up a stunning performance by bringing the nuanced details of the character.Though plays a supporting role,Ayushman khuran too fits the bill in his character. Special mention to Faruza(Begum), actor who portrayed Mirza's Assistant. Gulabo Sitabo starts from a landlord-Tenants issue and ends up saying the problems faced by a selfish and greedy man.

Gulabo Sitabo is interesting story set at Lucknow and revolves around owner of a manson and tenent who is living for many years and not going to vacate it anyhow. Twist comes in the storyline when a person from archeological department gets involved with tenant (played by Ayushman Khurana) and a lawyer start guiding the owner Amitabh Bachchan (playing role of Mirza). This Manson (Haveli) is inhibited by some other characters (mostly tenants) and plays role to take forward its story in funny manner while resisting to vacate.Shoojit Sircar's movie is dramatic with comic relief and has perfect acting not only by leading actors but by Vijay Raaz and Brijendra Kala as well.

From the beautiful duo of Shoojit Sircar and Juhi Chaturvedi comes another masterpiece that is as fresh and vibrant as morning dew on grass. It's a delight to watch Amitabh Bachchan pull off something like this, and the role was tailor made for him same as the kurtas he wears in the movie. The Awadhi mannerisms, the language, the stares everything is spot on! His glasses, his slouch, the way he walks and of course, his nose. It's a critically nuanced performance from the veteran actor and scene after scene you are left for asking more. The movie reaffirms the name.

Kalapana posted a review for Gulabo Sitabo in Movies
GULABO SITABO is the story of the rivalry between a tenant and a landlord. Mirza Chunnan Nawab (Amitabh Bachchan), 78, is married to Fatima Begum (Farrukh Jafar), who is nearly 17 years older to him. Begum owns more-than-a-century-old palatial mansion called Fatima Mahal in Lucknow, where she resides. But since she is quite old and also a bit delusional, Mirza takes care of the haveli. A part of Fatima Mahal is given to tenants, one of whom is Baankey Rastogi (Ayushmann Khurrana). Baankey’s family has been residing in the haveli as tenants since ages and Mirza now wants to drive Baankey and his family out since they are paying merely Rs. 30 as monthly rent. Mirza’s demand to increase the rent always meets with a stiff resistance from Baankey, further infuriating the former. In the absence of finances, Mirza is not even able to renovate the haveli and it’s in a completely dilapidated condition. The condition is so bad that a mere kick of Baankey leads to breaking of a toilet wall. Mirza demands that Baankey pay for the damages while Baankey makes it clear that maintenance is the responsibility of the landlord. The matter reaches the cops who tell them to take this dispute to civil court. At the police station, Gyanesh Shukla (Vijay Raaz) from the archaeology department overhears their commotion. He follows them and realizes that Fatima Mahal is a heritage property. He starts to click pictures secretly but Baankey catches him red-handed. Gyanesh however tells him and other tenants that the haveli is of heritage value and can also collapse anytime. He recommends that they allow Fatima Mahal to be handed over to their department who’ll then renovate it and convert it into a museum. In return, he’ll give them a decent-sized flat with all amenities. Mirza, on the other hand, meets a lawyer, Christopher Clarke (Brijendra Kala) who suggests that the former should sell off the mansion to solve the problems of the tenants once and for all. In the bargain, he’ll also get a handsome amount. However, it is Begum who owns the property and moreover, her siblings might also have ownership. As a result, Mirza sets off to find out who all from Begum’s side are alive and if they can give him a No-Objection Certificate over selling the mansion. What happens next forms the rest of the film. Juhi Chaturvedi's story is promising and novel. We have read and seen films about horrors faced by tenants. But landlord being unfairly harassed is also a reality and this is a rare film to focus on that aspect. Juhi Chaturvedi's screenplay, however, doesn’t do complete justice to the concept. The film is laced with some interesting characters and setting and so much could have been done with them. Juhi, however, lets the opportunity pass. Juhi Chaturvedi's dialogues are conversational and simple, with few of them being quite sharp and witty. Shoojit Sircar's direction is decent. He had a weak script in hand and hence, there isn’t much he could have done anyway. However, we have seen the charm of his execution in films like VICKY DONOR and PIKU. GULABO SITABO, too, is in the same zone but his direction leaves a lot to be desired. On the positive side, he captures the essence of Lucknow beautifully. On the big screen, experiencing it would have been interesting. He also extracts great performances from his actors. On the flipside, the humour is missing and it would have made a lot of difference. Also, a few developments are bewildering and this is especially with regards to the character of Mirza. On one hand, he’s supposed to be quite smart and money-minded, which made him marry Begum in the first place. But on the other hand, he’s also quite simpleton who didn’t even know the proper worth of the items he used to sell and even of the haveli in which he has been residing since many decades. GULABO SITABO starts off on a decent note, introducing the characters (including the mansion), the relevance of the title and the world in which they reside. The background score and even the situations give the vibe of a comic caper but there are hardly any funny moments in the movie. It’s only when Mirza wakes up in the middle of street is when the film actually and finally gets a laugh-worthy sequence. Things thankfully get better from here as Gyanesh Shukla and Christopher Clarke get introduced and it adds a lot to the game of one upmanship between Mirza and Baankey. Though the film keeps one glued, one does miss something exciting or even funny to happen with the characters. That happens only in the last 10-15 minutes. The twist in the tale is definitely unpredictable and though it’s not entirely unconvincing, it ends the film on a great note. Amitabh Bachchan delivers a smashing performance. His make-up is spot-on and the manner in which he gets totally into the skin of his character is seen to be believed. He makes an impact just through his expressions. In this regard, two scenes which really stand out are when he wakes up on the road and when he looks inquisitively as Vijay Raaz inspects the mansion. Ayushmann Khurrana also is quite entertaining but his screen time is less than that of Amitabh. This is the second consecutive time that Ayushmann has settled for an extended supporting role, after SHUBH MANGAL ZYADA SAAVDHAN [2020]. Farrukh Jafar has a significant role and leaves a huge mark. She in fact rocks the show in two key sequences in the second half. Vijay Raaz and Brijendra Kala are dependable as always. Srishti Shrivastava (Guddo) is quite confident. Others like Poornima Sharma (Fauzia), Annanya Dwivedi (Neetu), Ujali Raj (Payal), Sunil Kumar Verma (Mishra ji), Jogi Mallang (Munmun ji), Rajiv Pandey (Police inspector) and Behram Rana (Abdul Rehman) also do well. Shantanu Moitra, Abhishek Arora and Anuj Garg's music doesn’t have a shelf life. The theme music is catchy and works well. 'Madari Ka Bandar' is another song that in sync with the film’s theme. The rest of the songs like 'Kuya Leke Aayo Jagme', 'Kanjoos', 'Budhau' etc aren’t memorable at all. Background score is quirky and much better. Avik Mukhopadhayay's cinematography is excellent and captures Lucknow and especially the dilapidated mansion beautifully. Mansi Dhruv Mehta's production design also adds a lot to the realism of the film. Same goes for Veera Kapur Ee's costumes. None of the characters even remotely look glamorous and that goes in favour of the film. Pia Cornelius's prosthetics make-up design is excellent and adds to the impact. Chandrashekhar Prajapati's editing is passable. Though the film is just 124 minutes long, it seems quite slow. On the whole, GULABO SITABO is a decent entertainer for home viewing. Despite the lack of humour and an average script, the film works majorly because of the performances, the Lucknow setting and the twist in the end.

This movie focus on the Value of Money which changes from people to people as per situations. In the end it diverts to the value of relationships too. Mirza Stumbles with shock each time he hears the value of the Rent that he could get, the value of commission he could earn but, his whole life runs with petty cash. It will be audience turn to stumble and laugh. Both actor play a beautiful role throughout the movie.
